How to Apply Varathane Premium Wood Stains?
Surface Preparation
Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with 120 grit sandpaper and progress though 150, 180 and 220 grits.
Before staining, remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum, tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral spirits. For grease or glue, remove with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. Soft woods such as pine, fir, or maple require a wood conditioner. Use Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner before staining.
Application
Use only when air (ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. Stir the contents thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed before application. Apply with a brush or clean, lint-free cloth. Apply the stain across the grain until the wood is saturated on top. Wipe the excess stain off in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let the stain dry before wiping off the excess. A second coat can be applied after 2 hours. Do not sand between stain coats.
