How to Create a Magnetic Chalkboard Wall
Creating a magnetic chalkboard wall is a very simple project. All you need is a wall or surface of your choice, some simple house hold products, Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer and Chalkboard Paint. Besides, you will also need to follow some basic steps that are mentioned in the below section. - Magnetic Primer
- Chalkboard Paint
- Sand Paper
- Painter’s Tape
- Stir Stick
- Drop Cloth
- Surface of Your Choice
- Disposable Gloves
Step 1: Prepare the Wall
Whether you want to paint the entire wall or just a small section, first, tape off it by using painter’s tape and clean the area you are going to paint. If you have textured walls, you should make it as smooth as possible. Also, remove any nails or screws from the walls as well as sand down any bumps or rough spots. At last, wipe the wall down with a clean cloth. This will help in the longevity of the paint.
While the surface dries, you can prepare your magnetic primer by stirring. Usually, it takes 10 min, but, it is recommended to stir the primer until it begins to thicken slightly.
Step 2: Apply the Magnetic Primer
Once you are happy with your wall and primer, starts applying the Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer Paint directly on the wall as you do in case of any other paint. The best part of this product is that it can be top coated with any latex paint or even with chalkboard paint. However, you will need to apply at least 3-4 coats for using top coat over it.
Well, Rust-Oleum Magnetic Primer Paint takes 30 min to touch, it is advised to wait at least for the defined time before applying next coat. After completing all the coats, let the painted wall dry thoroughly.
Step 3: Check the Wall
Once the primer has dried, test it with a magnet to make sure that it has strong enough hold. If not, then add another coat of the magnetic primer on the wall. Don’t use any top coat of latex paint or chalkboard paint on the wall until the primer dries completely.
Step 4: Top-Coat the Painted Wall
Now as the primer has dried completely, you can apply Rust-Oleum Black Chalkboard Paint on it. The product is available in both brush on and spray form along with a range of color options. To use the Chalkboard brush on paint, first stir it completely to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed. Use a good quality synthetic brush, nap roller or a foam roller to give a smooth finish. Avoid excessive brushing or rolling.
On the other side, to use spray paint, first shake the cane Chalkboard Spray paint vigorously for one minute and make sure that the mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold can upright 12-16" from surface and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Keep the can in motion while spraying. Apply several light coats a few minutes apart to avoid drips and runs. Do not use near open flame. Once done with all the coats, let the wall dry for instructed time. Later on, enjoy your magnetic wall.
